Budapest, 18 September 2023. - The Hungarian Money Museum, located on Széll Kálmán Square, won the Grand Prize of the European Museum Academy (EMA) according to the decision of the 20-member international jury. 34 museums from 20 countries competed in the finals, which were held in Timisoara on Saturday evening, and this was the first time that a Hungarian institution won the grand prize.
The DASA Award, which recognises the importance of learning opportunities in a museum, was awarded by EMA to the Money Museum for the content of the exhibition, user-friendly exhibition spaces and effective museum education. In the fight for the prize, the Money Museum has made it into the top three alongside prestigious museums such as Forum Wissen in Göttingen, Germany, and the Carmen Thyssen Málaga Museum in Malaga, Spain.
The judges said: "The Money Museum offers visitors an interactive, entertaining way to learn about how financial processes operate, the basic rules of money use, and the activities of the Central Bank of Hungary. The use of state-of-the-art tools and exhibition organisation practices makes the visitor aware that the operation of money can be understood by everyone."
After the award ceremony, Eszter Hergár, Director of the Money Museum and Visitor Center, emphasized that in the year and a half since its opening, the Money Museum, which has 50 spectacular installations, has received more than 135,000 visitors so far. Last year, the institution was recognized as one of the best museums by the Museum Education and Training Center, and this year it received the Best of Budapest recognition and the Community Museum Award. Every exhibition and program at the Money Museum come free of charge, and the Panorama Terrace connected to the experience center can also be visited free of charge.
