Budapest, the 4th of May in 2024. The event, held annually since 1977, was hosted this year in Portimão, Portugal. The award ceremony on Saturday evening was preceded by a multi-day conference at the Portimão Municipal Theatre.

The Money Museum was up against strong competitors, with 50 top nominations from the 24 Council of Europe member states this year. The participation confirms that the Money Museum is on the right track, as there is a demand for financial education. This is now confirmed not only by the number of visitors and their satisfaction, but also by the most prestigious professional jury in Europe.

The Money Museum opened its doors on the 15th of March in 2022, in the renovated building of the former Postal Palace on Széll Kálmán Square. Its mission is to break down the taboos surrounding money and the functioning of the economy, thereby raising the populace’s financial literacy to a higher level. Visitors of the museum can gain a better understanding of the economic processes by experiencing Europe's most innovative central bank experience space.

About the award

The European Museum Forum is an independent, non-profit organisation whose main objective is to promote innovation in museum practice, exchange experiences across Europe and identify developments that have a significant impact on the national and international museum sector.

The award is open to European museums that have undergone a new or major renovation or development before the date of application, after January in 2019. Temporary or permanent exhibitions were both eligible. Museums and exhibitions that had been open for more than 4 years at the time of application were not eligible, nor were institutions that had already applied within 4 years.
