Coffee House Talks is the Money Museum's monthly event series. Our educational talks put money at the heart of the conversation. The aim of these fun, interactive evenings is to make us more aware of our finances, rather than treating them as a taboo. The evenings are always held in front of an audience and by involving said audience. The event is usually held in the Money Museum's lobby and café, but they were held on the Money Museum's Panoramic Terrace during the summer.
Who doesn't want to know where and how money is minted? The production of forint coins is just one of the exciting activities that are happening at the Hungarian Mint Ltd. The other is the production of official Hungarian commemorative coins, which pay tribute to notable anniversaries of great figures in Hungarian history, culture, science and art, as well as to important national and international events.
On the 13th of August, we could enter the special world of coin minting. Our knowledgeable guide was Teréz Horváthné Rudolf, CEO of the Hungarian Mint Ltd., who showed us, through a concrete coin, how the idea leads to the realisation and to the moment when we can hold an official or even a commemorative coin in our hands. During the talk, we learned basic concepts such as the difference between a coin and a medal, what a circulation coin is, what a first-day mint or even a mintmark is, and we also learned about the production process. At the end of the discussion, we were given some suggestions on what coins to collect and, as a beginner, which items to start collecting.
