Coin restoration workshops, coffee house talks, experiential painting, film screenings, handicraft activities, a visit from Santa Claus, puppet theatre and a new café experience await visitors in the last month of the year. All programmes are free, but registration is required.
On the 1st of December, the Money Museum will dress up in its festive finery and will welcome its visitors with a variety of programs during the preparation period before Christmas. From December, the café in the reception area will be offering a new menu, and it's worth stopping by for a coffee and a pastry. The renewal of the offer also includes the Money Museum Panorama Terrace, where you can take a look at Budapest in winter.
Coin restoration workshop
A series of coin restoration programmes will be launched this month. The workshop will give participants an insight into the challenges faced by coin and banknote restoration workshop. They can also try out different techniques and procedures under professional guidance. This programme of the museum is not only for collectors. The aim is to give participants general advice that will help them to reduce the damage to their own collections as much as humanly possible. While the programme on the 2nd of December will focus on modern and contemporary coins, the workshop on the 9th of December will take participants on a walk through the world of paper money and bonds. They will learn about the possibilities and dangers of cleaning paper and the basic questions about proper storage, and about the ethical foundations of the restoration of paper-based numismatic objects.
Actual and popular
On the 3rd, on the 10th and on the 17th of December, the Money Museum will once again host experiential painting sessions, where visitors can create their own painting with the help of an artist. The finished paintings can of course be taken home. Santa Claus will visit the Money Museum on the 6th of December. The open day will include a puppet show for children, starting at 17:00. On the 12th of December, Sándor Varga, a true creator of value, will be the guest of the Café House Talks series. A mathematician-businessman-youtuber, he is a hospitality enthusiast who believes in the power of the Michelin star.
The Legend of the Gold Train
A regular programme on Thursdays is the screening of the multi-award-winning film, The Legend of the Gold Train at 17 and 18 pm. The film tells the crime thriller-like story of a case from 78 years ago when, during the German occupation of Hungary in World War II, employees of the Central Bank of Hungary smuggled the Hungarian state’s 33 tonnes of gold out of the country on the Gold Train. Also, a regular programme on Sunday mornings is a handicrafts workshop. The programme for younger children will include Santa gift sacks, Christmas greeting cards, heavenly angels, fluffy lambs, a Christmas snow globe, a bird feeder and bushel making.
Opening hours during the holiday
The Money Museum is closed on every Tuesday, additionally it will also be closed on the 23rd, the 24th, the 25th, the 26th and the 31st of December and on the 1st of January!
