The independent central bank is one of the most important symbols of our country's sovereignty, and the 12 points of the 1848 revolution already called for its establishment. The independent Central Bank of Hungary, which was finally established in 1924 to regulate and supervise financial affairs, became one of the most important institutions of national unity. Thanks to the efforts of our great countrymen like Sándor Popovics, the first governor of the central bank, the foundations for the economic recovery of our country, which had suffered through the First World War, were laid down during first decade of the independent central bank's existence.
The centenary is linked to three dates in particular. On 26 April 1924, the Act establishing the Central Bank of Hungary came into force, on 24 May the joint stock company owning the central bank held its inaugural general meeting, and on 24 June the Central Bank of Hungary actually began its operations.
In the commemorative year, christened as the MNB100 year, we will launch a series of programmes that will span the entire centenary year, which deserves special attention. The commemorative events will focus on the periods and milestones of the last one hundred years, which illustrate the Central Bank of Hungary’s successful struggle to promote Hungarian interests throughout its history. Moreover, the central bank has always played an essential role in preserving the country's financial and economic stability, even in challenging historical years and in situations that threatened its basic functioning. A wealth of professional experience has been accumulated over a hundred years at our country's central bank, which the current leadership has used and continues to use for the benefit of the country. Just as the first ten years of the central bank laid the foundations for the decade that followed, the last decade behind us has been made successful thanks to the central bank.
These one hundred years for the Central Bank of Hungary was a century focused on standing its ground, serving the nation and working unceasingly for Hungary's prosperity.
You can find out more about the events of the MNB100 year on the centenary year's website and on the Central Bank of Hungary’s Facebook page.
