Since the dawn of its history, humanity has been fascinated by gold, a precious metal with a mystical lustre, which, in the walls of the Money Museum, symbolises not only material wealth but also spiritual wealth as well as the accumulation of knowledge. Gold is not only important for symbolic or aesthetic reasons: its trade and distribution for investment purposes is still dominant today, and in many parts of the world until the 1970s, the national gold reserve was the ultimate backing for money.
Although the national gold reserve no longer provides the basis for legal tender, its importance for economic stability remains very high. Under the menu item “About The Gold”, we present the historically significant program, during which the Central Bank of Hungary has increased the level of gold reserves by orders of magnitude in recent years.
Under this menu item, we also present an authentic, true story of how the nation's 30 tonnes of gold reserves were smuggled across the border by a railway train at the end of the Second World War in an adventure story-like manner. A year later, former employees of the Central Bank of Hungary took to the roads, risked their very lives to prevent the confiscation of the nation’s assets and, with extraordinary unity, brought them back to Hungary. In addition to our website, the story of the Gold Train is also presented in detail in the exhibition space.
